Giving the greatest gift — sign on to save lives at Medicare Australia

19 December 2007

Minister for Human Services, Senator Joe Ludwig, is urging all Australians wishing to give the gift of life through organ donation to take the opportunity this festive season to check they are properly registered on the Australian Organ Donor Register.

Administered by Medicare Australia, the Australian Organ Donor Register is the only national register for organ and tissue donation.

“The register provides a simple way for people to record their consent (or objection) to becoming an organ and/or tissue donor for transplantation after death,” Senator Ludwig said.

“There are currently over 1800 people in Australia on organ transplant waiting lists – some of whom will die waiting.”

“During this festive season, I’d encourage people who have chosen to give the gift of life to ensure their registration is up to date.”

People can register online via the Medicare Australia website, www.medicareaustralia.gov.au, call 1800 777 203 or visit their closest Medicare Australia office to sign on to the register or to update their details.

Senator Ludwig said it was important for people to realise that in the past, intention to donate may have been expressed via other means, such as ticking a box on a driver’s licence renewal form.

“However, your driver’s licence is not enough. Only Medicare Australia administers the nationally recognised mechanism that allows people to register their decision about becoming a donor,” Senator Ludwig said.

“Registration is easy, voluntary and allows you to choose which organs and tissue you are willing to donate.”

After registering, it is extremely important to talk to family and friends about your decision. Should the circumstances arise, they will be a crucial part of the donation process, and will be asked to confirm that you had not changed your mind since you had registered.

“If you are with your family during the Christmas and New Year period, why not take just a few minutes to discuss your decision,” Senator Ludwig added.
