Minister advises doctors to convert to online claiming—now
Doctors and health professionals using the outdated Medclaims system have been reminded that time is fast running out for them to switch to a new electronic way of processing Medicare claims.
Minister for Human Services, Senator Joe Ludwig, yesterday met with peak medical bodies, asking for continued help with transitioning their members to a new claiming system.
“I reminded them that there are less than 5 weeks to go before it becomes impossible to make claims through the outdated Medclaims system,’” Senator Ludwig said.
“There is no going back on the Medclaims shutdown. The previous government made the decision and we are seeing through that decision.”
“The system will shut down from midnight June 30,” Senator Ludwig said.
“I am particularly keen for those doctors who have not yet decided what system they are going to use from July 1, to choose now. Medicare Australia has information to help them make this decision.”
The alternatives are internet-based Medicare Online, the EFTPOS-based Easyclaim or a return to paper billing.
“I want to encourage the 450 practices that are planning to use the Medicare Online system and are waiting for software to be installed to contact their software vendor to ensure that the system is installed in time for the 30 June deadline,” Senator Ludwig said.
“I understand that around 300 practices have not yet even registered to obtain their PKI/digital certificate. Medicare Online claiming cannot operate without this secure connection. I know that Medicare Australia is giving high priority to these registrations, but doctors need to act fast.”
Senator Ludwig advised that Medicare Australia staff are available to assist practices with these technical requirements.
“I have said before how important this is to practices and their patients and I again encourage doctors to move as quickly as possible, so that no one is disadvantaged in July.”
