Gillard honours Australian pioneer Caroline Chisholm at Centrelink opening

The most senior female political leader in Australian history, Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard, has today officially opened a major new Government site named in honour of one of Australia’s leading women pioneers, Caroline Chisholm.

The Deputy Prime Minister unveiled a plaque celebrating the formal dedication of the Caroline Chisholm Centre, which is Centrelink’s new national headquarters.

“It is particularly fitting that a courageous champion of the people such as Caroline Chisholm will continue to inspire all those who work in this showpiece building,” Ms Gillard said.

Coinciding with the 200th anniversary of the birth of Caroline Chisholm, the opening ceremony recognised the significant role women have played in the Australia’s development.

“By recognising the contribution of Caroline Chisholm, we are not only honouring her pioneering work but are making sure we continue to keep the welfare of our most vulnerable citizens a priority,” said Ms Gillard, who is also Social Inclusion Minister.

The Minister in charge of Centrelink, Minister for Human Services, Senator Joe Ludwig, also took part in the celebrations.

“Naming the centre in honour of Caroline Chisholm highlights how the work of the tireless welfare reformer is reflected in Centrelink’s core values,” Senator Ludwig said.

“The legacy of Caroline Chisholm is motivation for Centrelink staff, as they strive to enhance the high level service they provide our community,” he said.

The name for the building was chosen from more than 145 suggestions submitted by Centrelink employees.

Accommodating more than 2,400 Centrelink staff, the 4.5 star greenhouse rated building houses the majority of Canberra staff under one roof, increasing efficiency and enhancing team work.

The 40,000 square metre unique building design has already proved very successful at bringing Centrelink staff together.

An award-winning, energy-efficient building, the Caroline Chisholm Centre has many design features to conserve and recycle water and has been recognised by the ACT Master Builders’ Association for eco-efficiency and environmental management.

The Opening

More than 100 invited quests attended the opening celebrations which included an address by Centrelink’s Chief Executive Officer, Jeff Whalan, as well as morning tea, displays of Caroline Chisholm memorabilia and a community art exhibition.

Staff watched the opening ceremony from all five levels using the atrium walkways, balconies and bridges that connect their offices.
