Donate at Medicare in March

Minister for Human Services, Chris Bowen MP, today urged visitors to Medicare offices to donate their loose change for people living with leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and related blood cancers.

Leukaemia Foundation of Australia donation boxes will be on the counters of Medicare offices across Australia throughout March.

“This fundraising initiative is part of Medicare’s commitment to fundraising partnerships with health-related charities to improve Australia’s health,” Mr Bowen said.

“I encourage Australians visiting a Medicare office in March to contribute what they can to this worthy cause, and thank the public for their generous donations Medicare’s fundraising partnerships.”

Leukaemia Foundation of Australia Chief Executive Officer, Peter Cox, said donations would support patients and their families, and contribute to cancer research.

“The Leukaemia Foundation of Australia is committed to providing vital services to patients and families across Australia,” Mr Cox said.

“The support of local communities and organisations such as Medicare Australia is vital for the management of the increased incidence in blood cancers across the country.”

Every two years Medicare seeks new fundraising partnerships with national health-related charities.

Medicare raised almost $60,000 for the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave event in March 2009, and collected $80,000 for the Starlight Children’s Foundation in December 2009.

National health-related charities that wish to apply to be a partner can go to www.medicareaustralia.gov.au for more information and application documents.

Applications close on 30 April 2010.
