Appointments to the Board of Australian Hearing

The Minister for Human Services, Chris Bowen MP, today announced appointments to the Board of Australian Hearing.

The Minister has appointed the Hon Michael Knight AO and Mrs Swati Dave to the board. Mr Kim Keogh and Dr Kelvin Kong are being reappointed to the Board. Ms Kathryn Greiner has previously been re-appointed by the Government as Chairman of Australian Hearing and will continue in that role.

The two new board members will be appointed for a two-year term commencing in September 2010. The reappointed board members will also commence a two-year term.

“It is a great outcome for Australian Hearing to have a board of with a wide range of skills and experience,” Mr Bowen said.

“Mr Knight is a former Minister for the Sydney Olympics and Paralympics, and has considerable experience with public sector commercial entities. Mrs Dave has broad experience in business and management through various senior roles in the financial sector.”

Mr Bowen acknowledged the contribution of outgoing board members, Ms Susan Hooke and Mr Warren Stretton, during their five years of service.

“I thank Susan and Warren for their significant efforts in assisting Australian Hearing to deliver its invaluable services to Australians.”

Mr Knight, who currently holds a variety of board positions and consultancies, said he was delighted to be joining an organisation widely acknowledged as a leader in its field.

“Hearing impairment is increasingly being recognised as a broader community issue, and I look forward to contributing to the work of Australian Hearing as the largest provider of hearing services in Australia in this important endeavour,” Mr Knight said.

Mrs Dave, who currently works as Executive General Manager, Global Specialised Finance, Wholesale Banking at National Australia Bank, said it was a great privilege to join Australian Hearing.

“It is a delight to have the chance to work with Australian Hearing to help Australians improve their quality of life. I am looking forward to working with the board, management, staff and clients to ensure Australian Hearing remains one of the world's leading hearing services providers,” Mrs Dave said.

About Australian Hearing

Australian Hearing, a Federal Government agency within the Department of Human Services, is the sole Government provider of hearing assessment and rehabilitation services to Australians under 21 years of age; adults with complex needs; and eligible Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, including those aged 50 years and over. These services are delivered through the Community Service Obligation (CSO) Program.

Australian Hearing also provides hearing services to older Australians who are holders of a pensioner concession card, veterans, members of the Australian Defence Force and clients on a Government funded rehabilitation program. Voucher Services are administered under the Australian Government Hearing Services Program by the Department of Health and Ageing’s Office of Hearing Services.

Australian Hearing provides hearing health services through a national network of 110 centres and undertakes research through the National Acoustic Laboratories.

Mr Knight has had extensive experience as a board member in public sector commercial entities, and has been an advocate for disadvantaged groups and individuals throughout many years of community service.

About Mrs Swati Dave

Mrs Dave has an extensive background in the banking and finance sector, including executive positions with Deutsche Bank and AMP Henderson Global Investors. Mrs Dave’s current position is Executive General Manager, Global Specialised Finance, Wholesale Banking at National Australia Bank, with responsibility for offices in Australia, the United Kingdom and Hong Kong.
