Media release: Simplifying services for Charlestown residents

20 April 2018

The Hon Michael Keenan MP

Minister for Human Services and Digital Transformation

Charlestown residents will be able to access all their Medicare and Centrelink needs from one convenient, coordinated location from Monday, with the old Medicare office at the Hilltop Plaza moving directly over the road to bigger premises at the Charlestown Service Centre.

All staff from the old Medicare office will relocate to the Charlestown Service Centre. By having more staff in the one location we can provide more efficient services to residents.

Moving the Medicare shopfront just over the road also ensures Charlestown residents will have the same access to public transport and parking.

Since the move away from Medicare cash rebates in 2012, there has been a significant reduction in the number of people visiting Medicare shopfronts.

In fact, 97 per cent of Charlestown residents now claim their rebate electronically at their doctor’s surgery.

The reduction in demand for shopfront services has also been driven by new technology and changing customer preferences for how they interact with the Australian Government.

Charlestown residents have embraced the use of myGov and Express Plus Medicare apps to claim their Medicare rebate, at a time and place convenient to them.

Claiming electronically is the fastest way to receive your Medicare rebate, with most rebates paid into your bank account within 48 hours.

The new Charlestown One-Stop Shop is located at 331 Charlestown Road and is open Monday to Friday, from 8.30 am to 4.30 pm.
